Objections to the epistemology: To advance in knowledge is to progress in the knowledge of God Himself. God must have created me with this nature. The part it plays in our lives is considerable: I saw on the contrary that from the mere fact that I thought of doubting the truth of other things, it followed quite evidently and certainly that I existed; whereas if I had merely ceased thinking, even if everything else I had ever imagined had been true, I should have had no reason to believe that I existed.

Also, in saying an object ten times farther away than a near object should be a hundred times smaller, he is speaking of area; it would be ten times smaller in linear height. But does the supposed falsehood of this belief mean that I do not exist.
Thus what we possess, our perceptions, are the effects of external causes; and in thinking that we know external objects, we are reasoning backwards from effect to cause.
In mechanics, his work was definitely blocked by his failure to even think that a notion of mass was essential to any mechanics that was to move from kinematics to dynamics. Further, Descartes knew that some problems rely on measurements that can only be made with the senses, including determining the size of the sun 7: When particles with one or another degree of spin interact with the nerves of the retina, they cause those nerves to jiggle in a certain way.
Descartes had no doubt that human beings know some things and are capable of discovering others, including at least since his metaphysical insights of fundamental truths about the basic structure of reality.

Our other ideas are ideas of finite beings none of which can guarantee their own existence and the ideas of which might therefore be false; but this one idea, this one essence that is before the mind, is the idea of a being infinite in its creative powers and which is therefore the essence of a being that can guarantee its own existence, which in turn therefore guarantees the truth of the idea of itself.
Dolet was a French scholar, translator and printer. We and everything else in the universe, on the other hand, are contingent beings; it is possible for us not to exist, and in the past and possibly in the future we have indeed not existed.

Let deduction but go on to the end, and it must assuredly attain that exhaustive knowledge which is the goal of investigation, but such is not the case.
Ockham wrote down in words a formulae that in propositional logic, would later be called De Morgan's Laws. Within this framework, and taking into account the reading of Cicero, Descartes would have been exposed in school to the doctrines of the ancient atomists, Plato, and the Stoics, and he would have heard of the skeptics.
